Started in 1998 by designer Dynand Fariz, the fashion carnival aims to encourage creativity and get youth involved in fashion. Over the years it has evolved to include various themes, from” world treasures” to “evolution.” Often these themes relate to events of global importance, such as the Indian Ocean tsunami. The model above, pictured on Aug. 22, wears an outfit from the Mahabharata, an ancient Sanskrit epic from India.
Every year, Mr. Fariz travels to Jember from Jakarta on the weekends to train participants, sharing images with them from places and events that relate to the year’s theme, according to his profile on the website of Ashoka, a non-profit organization that support social entrepreneurs. Mr. Fariz was selected as an Ashoka fellow in 2006. Participants also get training on facial expressions and help choreograph moves they’ll set to music that accompanies them along the parade route.
